The two images are both selling ideas and persuading people in different ways. The first image is advertising a new range to surpass all others an american oven that is more than just an oven but a celebration of americanism and all it means to be American.
The second image on the other hand is reaching out to a more modern society making it much more streamlined in composition. This image is playing more on peoples conscience it gives an image of the future an aspiration, of what would you tell your children in the future would you have storys of bravery in war or nothing to say at all and the quilt of living with that.
The two posters are from completely different times therefor there illustration differs on the basis of what was more apropriate in this time. The first image is very archaic there is alot going on its trying to sell the idea of america and affluence more than the cooker this is clear in the way the images are arranged with uncle sam is sat in the middle he is america and all that is american and is given centre stage. And people respond to this simple message in that what uncle sam says goes if he endorses this product then this must be the american drea . The cooker is offset secondary to uncle sam and his dinner party. The image is selling a lifestyle and a cooker to go with it. These images is are very symbolic and are based around is america playing itself up and mocking the rest of the world.
The second image is equally symbolic in its imagery it has lots of subtle indications to the patriotic mindset of the people. Both images in some ways are focusing on the pride of there seperate nations. There is alot of symbolism on the second image the toy soldiers represent the queens guard a symbol of the nation. This patriotism transfers in the upholstery in the chair to the patterns on the curtains showing the red rose.
Each image is aiming at two very different eras and two very different societies and each takes these elements to effectively play on these features. The first image is speaking to a predominately racist society where black people are considered inferior it is mainly aimed at upper and middle classes who apire to be upper, and in some ways to all classes this idea that america is the cradle of civilization. The image is mostly directed at affluent people that can afford the american dream and the luxury of slaves to go with there brand new range, there american dream in the form of an ovan. The image is also aiming at the mentality of american people of the time obsessed in there own importance, this is perfectly portrayed in the image in that the rest of the world has been invited to americas table and that america is greater than the rest of the world and can cater for them all. The same contempt and ignorance to all other cultures and nations is demonstrated in the menu in that other nations are mocked and portrayed as backward and less advanced so Ireland is scratching around eating only potatoes compared to america with there superior food and range. The world is portrayed as a joke a figure of fun in appearance and the faces of the people surrounding it ,pulling faces of pity and amusement.
The imagery is more subtle in parts one of the children is set back and this is England a clear sign that america is wanting its own identity, this is also shown in the clock on the mantle symbolizing with its hands one hundred years of america the nation.
The second image is speaking to a more modern society but as easily influenced but in different ways. It works more with typography because this society is more literate than the american society who replied on image and visual to inform them. The image is asking the question what will you do it leaves you to make your own decisions . This works in keeping with the imagery as the little girl is asking her father and in turn he is asking you. This is very much playing with peoples guilt at many different levels it paints two pictures of the future one to aspire to a vision, a sucessful man a place where many men would want to be in the future. And the other of a man living in shame saying dont make the same mistakes as i did in not going and having nothing to tell.
Primarily the image is glamorizing war portraying it as a worth while venture an experience that will bring with it affluence ,respect and greatness.
